Top Interior Design Trends for 2024: Redefining Your Living Spaces

Here’s a curated list of the top trends that promise to revitalize your home.

We’re about to hop into a brand new year, which has a lot of us excited about what new things and exciting transformations are to come. Whether it’s your lifestyle, your work habits, or the interior of your home, there’s something about welcoming a new year that always has us dreaming big.

So, we did a little bit of research for you, as a way to propel that excitement and give you some ideas about how you can make big or small changes to your home in 2024. First, we wanted to give you some ideas about colour trends for this upcoming year (peep our blog post about Pantone's 2024 Paint Colour Of The Year), but we thought we'd go even further. So, we looked into the design forecasts of the world’s leading experts: Architectural Digest, Good Housekeeping, HGTV, and more. Here’s a curated list of the top trends that promise to revitalize your home.

Brown Is The New Black: Infusing Warmth and Neutrals

A dining room with wood stairs, a fancy light fixture, and a round table with four black chairs

For a while there, we were getting deep into grey territory… but, 2024 invites you to bid farewell to grays as we witness a resurgence of the brown shades. It’s no surprise since the mid-century modern design style has become increasingly more popular, and now browns are making a bold statement in fabrics, textiles, and cabinetry. A recent survey conducted by the New York Design Center revealed that more than 90% of respondents predict that browns are going to dominate in the colour space this year.

Actionable Tip: Look around the spaces in your home that you want to feel the most cozy and warm. Is it your living room? Is it your bedroom? Then brainstorm ways to incorporate brown hues into your space’s colour palette. Maybe it’s a fresh coat of paint and a new bedspread, maybe you can find a floor rug, get creative! And don’t be afraid to use the internet for inspiration.

Dynamic Range Hoods: Elevating Kitchen Aesthetics

A white kitchen with floating shelves, white cabinetry, and a white hood vent

Firstly, I’d like to say that if you’re in the market for a kitchen renovation this year… I am jealous. Secondly, if you’re in the market for a kitchen renovation, lock down a contractor STAT. And thirdly, if you’re in the market for a kitchen renovation, 2024 is bringing a fresh focus on dynamic range hoods. You know those boxy-looking, stainless steel hoods (the ones you likely have in your current kitchen)? Well, say goodbye. Anticipate bolder designs featuring unique textures like plaster or wood fluting. Striking hood vents and ranges are a great way to make a statement in your kitchen.

Actionable Tip: For something as bold as a statement range hood, we seriously recommend hiring an interior designer for this one. Someone who can visualize your design style and what the finished space might look like, as well as measure and order the appropriate materials.

Take Space & Embrace Simplicity

Smart home this, smart home that – the technological whirlwind is driving in the backseat in 2024 as homeowners are looking for a bit of a pause from their digitally-immersed lives. It feels like our homes are hard-wired to do everything we need them to do, but it can be overwhelming, and start to feel like it’s taking control. Experience the tranquillity of a well-deserved self-care session, without the buzz of tech… What does that look like in a bathroom? It looks like big windows for natural light instead of fluorescent lighting, it looks like cozy towel sets instead of towel heaters… you get the idea.

Actionable Tip: Next time you’re feeling the pressure of buying some new smart gadget for your home, take a step back and reflect. Why are you considering this new device? Is it because you do, truly, desperately need it? Or because Amazon is having a sale? Chances are, more often than not, you don’t need it.

Live Boldly

We said it once and we will say it again, grays and whites are OUT. Architectural Digest Interior Designer, Leah Alexander, predicts 2024 to be the year that homeowners are going to get extra spicy with their style. Attention all paint stores: get ready for an increase in vibrant and audacious colour choices. And maybe that’s why brown is also so popular… because it complements vibrant colours so well!

Actionable Tip: If you’re uncertain about bold colours, consider accent walls, furniture, or decor elements first. These are more non-committal options to a full-blown, chartreuse kitchen with orange backsplash tiles.

Sustainability Continues To Be Top Of Mind

Eco-friendly bath products and toothbrushes

We’ve seen homeowners make more eco-conscious decisions lately when it comes to their homes, and we will only continue to see this trend prevail in 2024. There’s going to be an influx of homeowners purchasing sustainable materials like seaweed lamps and mycelium features. Making your home more sustainable will make you feel even more fulfilled at the end of your renovation.

Pro Tip: There’s a sustainable Japanese-made plaster material called Shukkui that you should keep on your radar - it’s made entirely out of natural seaweed fibres.

Choose Warmth For An Inviting Living Room

Yes, the minimalist style and values are still very popular, but cold, white living rooms are on their way out. When reimagining your living space, embrace a more organic and inviting feel. Shift your gaze away from bright whites and grays, and explore creams, browns, rusts, and muted greens for a cozier living environment. Your guests will feel more welcomed, and you’ll find yourself easing into relaxation just a little bit more than you otherwise would have.

Actionable Tip: Research warm colour palettes and see what resonates with you. Test a few colour samples on the walls to see how they fare in the natural and artificial lighting in your home.

Chartreuse, Do You Remember Her? Well, She’s Back!

Oh baby, I am pumped about this one. Now and then, chartreuse reemerges as a trending colour that dominates in interior design. Its recurrence is more frequent than any other colour out there, probably due to the fact that it can be tailored to fit a variety of styles. 2024 sees this colour in all forms and uses, from wall colours to furniture items, to cabinetry. Expert designers recommend incorporating this colour without going full-blown neon.

Actionable Tip: If you love this colour, but aren’t sure you’re ready to dive head-first into splashing it everywhere, experiment with it in small doses, such as throw pillows or a statement furniture piece. This is a great way to infuse this colour’s energy into your decor.

Choose More Timeless Metallics For Fixtures

For a while there, we saw brass fixtures becoming super popular. But in 2024, homeowners are likely going to opt for polished nickels, pewters, coppers, and Corten steel. A lot of people felt that while the brass finish looked great, it became dated fairly quickly, so this year the focus is on creating a timeless and enduring aesthetic.

Actionable Tip: Updating fixtures is a great way to freshen up your home without doing a complete renovation.

Make A Statement With Felt Walls and Wallpaper Doors

Soft finishes (and when we say soft, we mean that literally) are making a statement in 2024, with designers using mohair and corduroy on walls. Texture on walls adds dimension, depth, and drama; pizzazz that you didn’t know you needed. Additionally, how designers are thinking about wallpaper is transforming and evolving… wallpaper doors are becoming incredibly popular and are used by some of the world’s most talented interior designers.

More On Corduroy’s Nostalgic Comeback

Corduroy isn’t just being used on walls, its comeback season is sprouting in all sorts of ways! This is a trend that people are embracing with open arms. Corduroy is an extremely nostalgic material that is the epitome of comfort. Corduroy throw pillows, upholstered furniture, you’ll even see corduroy placemats. This is a design trend that if done properly, is sure to be timeless.

Thrifty Tip: Check out consignment and thrift stores for corduroy decor items.

Fulfilling My Lifelong Dream: Canopy Beds

A canopy bed with a floral bedspread

Canopy beds are synonymous with dreamy. When I think of a canopy bed, I think of a gorgeous, open-air bedroom in Bali with clean, white sheets, so you won’t be surprised to hear that I am absolutely STOKED to see that clean-lined canopy beds are on the rise for 2024. Canopy beds date back to medieval times (crazy, right?) and so designs with chain-clad frames are bringing a hint of that medievalism to contemporary bedrooms.

Tip: Buy a canopy bed, just do it. Live your lifelong dream of being a medieval princess.

Closing Thoughts As We Enter 2024

I love to look back at the list of trends that are planned to be popular in the upcoming year. Many of which contradict one another, it serves as a great reminder that style is so unique. Each person has their preference when it comes to their home, whether it’s minimalist and warm, or bold and eclectic. But if there’s one takeaway I’d love for you to gather in this article, it’s that you shouldn’t be afraid to step outside the box and try something new. Let 2024 be the year you express your unique creative spirit within your home.
